Swedish media company Modern Times Group (MTG) is an international media company with one of the largest entertainment content portfolios in the industry. It broadcasts premium live sports such as the Champions League and Formula 1, along with premium US drama, locally produced TV series, reality TV and comedy, to over 130 countries.
Content is delivered via free to air and pay TV platforms across Scandinavia, the Baltics, Central and Eastern Europe and into emerging markets in Africa. Viasat is also one of the largest commercial radio operators in the Nordic and Baltic regions.
Having launched TV3, the first commercial channel in Scandinavia, on New Year’s Eve in 1987, the group now employs in excess of 3000 employees and posted revenues in excess of SEK15bn in 2014.
When the UK operation elected to relocate to its new Chiswick facility in West London, from an existing installation in West Drayton, MTG took the opportunity to refresh its playout technology and to address operational issues with its legacy equipment. At the heart of the new installation sits a 48 channel Marina automation system which has been supplied as part of a turnkey system via systems integrator BCE, a subsidiary of RTL in Luxembourg.
Pebble Beach Systems Sales Director Tom Gittins comments:
We delivered a multichannel playout system to MTG in Sweden soon after Pebble Beach Systems was founded, and have been working closely with the group for many years. The subsequent supply of a playout system to Viasat Ghana was followed with a major project at Viasat Riga, where we provide an end to end workflow solution, including media management. We have also supplied automation to MTG’s operation in Tanzania. This new installation went on air during March 2015 and is the largest Marina deployment in the UK. It controls a range of third party technology including Harmonic video servers, and is responsible for the playout of the main TV3 channel plus a number of opt out channels which carry region-specific commercials to a total of 18 sub-regions, across Scandinavia, Russia and Hungary.
The system also handles the playout of a number of thematic and film channels from the Chiswick facility. The new installation introduced a number of new systems that required integration to improve the overall workflow process, and Pebble Beach Systems worked closely with a number of vendors on Playlist, Graphics and Media Management integration
Magnus Lindholm is CEO at MTG Broadcast Center AB, in Stockholm, Sweden, and oversaw the selection process.
We are excited to be implementing this next generation automation platform. It was important for us to select a solution which can evolve and develop as our business needs change over the coming years. In addition to providing expert assistance to us during the design phase of this project, Pebble Beach Systems continues to deliver excellent support on an ongoing basis for the systems we already have in operation.
