Engineering Manager

Pebble Beach Systems Limited, trading as Pebble, is a leading provider of software and solutions to broadcasters; we deliver the technology which controls the playout of nearly 2000 TV channels in more than 50 countries worldwide. Pebble is looking for someone to support the ongoing innovation and technical proficiency of the R&D Department and to work alongside the Development Technical Lead(s) and Product Owner(s). This newly created role will focus on the people, processes and culture within the team. The role holder will bring a level of technical understanding but their key strengths and experience will lie in creating high performance teams, achieved by a adopting a range of interpersonal and people management skills, together with the ability to motivate and drive delivery.



Responsibilities:

The role holder will:

  • Support, invest in and develop a highly motivated and talented team of Engineers, setting clear expectations via practices such as holding regular 1:1s and setting personal objectives that align with department and company goals.
  • Create a culture of continuous improvement and feedback (using tools such as Personal Velocity, 360 Feedback).
  • Put in place processes to ensure the recruitment, induction and ongoing development so Pebble can confidently retain the best talent in the sector.
  • Create growth opportunities for team members and address gaps via technical or non-technical skills mentoring and performance management.
  • Create a high performing and positive work environment based on transparency, accountability, and trust, aligned with Pebble’s mission and values.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers and the Operations Team in project planning, dependency management, risk management and continuous process improvement for an optimal flow of value for customers and the business (with an appropriate use of metrics).
  • Connect with management and other teams to unblock ‘bottle-necks’, provide visibility and transparency on product initiatives and team progress – creating tools and communication channels that support shared ownership and reporting.
  • Work with the Management Team, Development Technical Leads and Product Owners to create an infrastructure for people and processes that can be easily scaled up to meet demand.
  • Monitor team budget(s) to ensure that all required resources are in place, at the right time, so that the software teams can deliver on their commitments and goals.

Skills and Attributes:

  • Strong leadership, planning and delivery skills
  • Passionate about people and improving the environment in which they work
  • Demonstrable experience of developing, coaching, mentoring and providing feedback to team members (not shying away from having difficult conversations if required)
  • Experience of managing and delivering impactful projectsin a rapidly evolving, technical environment

Solutions Architect

Reporting to the Solutions Architecture Manager, this role is based within the cross-disciplinary Solutions Architecture Department, formed of pre-sales, proposals and project management skilled resources. The purpose of the role is to ensure an integrated customer journey from initial enquiry to project delivery. The Solution Architect will work closely with the Sales Team to help identify, qualify and create bid solutions centred around Pebble Beach Systems’ offerings to customers across the world.

Each Solution Architect team member is responsible for a portfolio of qualified opportunities which they will work on, together with the Regional Sales Managers (RSM), to develop and create a successful technical and commercial proposal. The Solution Architect is responsible for ensuring that plans, risks and commercial terms are identified and agreed with the business prior to contract.



The focus of the Solutions Architecture Department is to have continuity from bid into delivery so that customers have a common touchpoint between stages: ensuring that information from bid to project stage is maintained, relationships are established and nurtured and, ultimately, that projects are delivered in the most efficient way.

The Solution Architect will manage resources to deliver the project(s) and be responsible for reporting status and managing the finances to ensure that projects progress on time and on budget.

The Solution Architect will ensure that reports are produced in a timely manner to raise risks and issues, focus the Pebble organisation on milestones and deliverables and ensure alignment across all stakeholders.

Department Outcomes

  • To coordinate with the other Pebble teams, ensuring resource and development needs are understood and delivered on time
  • Work to agreed best practice processes and support the improvement of process and tools through lessons captured during bids and projects.
  • Provide technical information, including responding to RFI’s and RFP’s, that allow the Sales Team to complete the sales process.
  • Design and delivery any POC’s requested to aid the sales process.
  • Generating project plans and supporting documentation to ensure system delivery to the agreed specification.
  • Manage internal engineering resource to deliver the project to agreed timescales, completing the project cycle by passing it onto the support team
  • Lease with third parties as required to ensure the project is delivered.
  • Providing status and financial reports to internal departments as needed.
  • Give Solutions Architecture team a greater input into designing systems at the bid stage, eliminating the potentially lengthy project interpretation process when an order is placed and closing the gap between customer expectation and reality.

 Activities
Solutions Architecture team carry out the following functions:

  • Supporting pre-sales activities
  • Respond to incoming RFIs, RFPs and tender documents
  • Using bid reviews, establish which enquiries to accept and decline
  • Liaise with regional sales managers to tailor responses
  • Generate and maintain collateral to support responses – with recourse to Marketing and Documentation functions as appropriate
  • Maintain and operate demo kit
  • Influence the product roadmaps and development effort
  • Support RSMs with onsite and remote demos and PoCs
  • Support Marketing with systems for trade shows.
  • Attend trade shows – build and de-rig stand, and participate in demos and meetings
  • Assign project engineer and brief Dev on work required, and raise tickets as appropriate
  • Manage project timeline and liaise with customer re timings and deliverables
  • Generate and agree Statement of Works with the customer
  • Order any hardware and arrange for this to be configured to customer requirements
  • Liaise with development team and oversee the development of customer specific software
  • Oversee the delivery and installation and acceptance of the project
  • Manage internal resources to resolve post-delivery issues
  • Roll out the software – remotely or on-site by the Project Engineer
  • Oversee handover to Support
  • Maintain ongoing relationship with customers to maximise repeat business.

Experience & Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous experience of working within a customer facing broadcast environment
  • Previous experience of Bid and Project Management in a technology delivery discipline, experience using PRINCE2, APM is desirable
  • Ability to build, manage and motivate teams in a project environment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Communication and self-management skills to deliver competing priorities on time.
  • Fluency in English with strong written and verbal communications skills (a 2nd European Language is highly desirable)
  • A degree, or equivalent, in the field of science, engineering or computing
  • Flexibility to travel to meet project requirements (c.10-20% of time spent travelling)

Software Developer (Customer Fulfilment)

To support our expansion, we are looking for a Software Developer to join our CF Development team to primarily work on “Lighthouse”, a browser-based control and monitoring frontend to our flagship automation offering “Marina”. Marina is real time, and is capable of controlling dozens of third-party devices through communication protocols, IP, Serial, REST and SOAP and is written primarily in C++ upon the Qt framework. Lighthouse is a web-based alternative front-end into Marina, offering a subset of functionality and control that is expanding in accordance with customer needs and the direction of the business and industry.

The successful candidate will work primarily on Lighthouse, based on Javascript (with Typescript), and HTML & CSS.



Responsibilities:

  • Investigate, design and implement solutions to problems and new feature requirements
  • Setting up / configuring test environments for use whilst developing code
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the software practices within the business
  • Find, report and fix defects, work with support team to help diagnose and fix customer issues

Experience & Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in developing software products using the complete software development life-cycle.
  • Experience in developing software to run in a browser (i.e. Javascript, HTML and CSS), and having that software interact with other services (in this case, Marina takes that role) via REST APIs (SOAP and other webservice styles would be additionally helpful).
  • Proven ability to investigate, analyse and exercise existing code alongside the creation of effective, efficient solutions to new requirements
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Communication and self-management skills to deliver competing priorities on time.
  • A degree, or equivalent, in the field of science, engineering or computing

 Desirable skills:

  • Knowledge of, or ability to get up to speed quickly, with Angular (Lighthouse front end), Node.js (Lighthouse backend), MongoDB (Lighthouse database)
  • An understanding of modern C++ (i.e. C++11 and later) and an understanding of C++98/03; Marina is principally written in C++ and this role is a part of the team that develops Marina; this is ancillary to the principal required technologies above.
  • Experience working with SQL, XML, client/server communication and synchronisation across standard networks
  • Experience within the Broadcast industry

Junior Technical Author

The Junior Technical Author will assist the Technical Author in maintaining and producing internal and external documentation. Types of documentation would include producing and maintaining all company product manuals, producing and maintaining pre-sales product feature guides, and user guides which includes how-to’s and configuration.

The Junior Technical Author will also be expected to assist with training internally and externally on the company’s products. This will also include the production of training videos. The Junior Technical Author will report to the Head of Automation Solutions.



General Duties

  • Writing documentation to explain software features to customers:
    • Create Product User Manuals where necessary
    • Add to existing Product User Manuals when new features are introduced
    • Customer engineering bulletins for use by Sales
  • Writing technical documentation to explain to end-users how to integrate with Pebble software::
    • Adobe Flash production guide
    • API technical reference guide for use by external vendors
    • Marina Playlist XML structure
  • Writing internal documentation on how to configure Pebble software
  • Producing and Improving Training literature including Training videos
  • Maintain the office demonstration and training systems in a pre-configured usable state
  • Be available to assist with demonstrating Pebble products to potential new customers at customer sites, or at trade shows as requested
  • Providing training sessions to Pebble staff or customers
  • Provide feedback and to introduce new processes, and improvements

Necessary Qualities/Experience: 

  • Able to juggle multiple priorities and deliver successfully in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent logic and problem-solving abilities, with meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to break down complex technical concepts to a non-technical level
